Overview

Tuina is a therapeutic massage from traditional Chinese medicine. The name combines two of its techniques: tui, to push, and na, to grasp.

It is firmer and more targeted than a spa massage. The practitioner works along meridians and acupuncture points to free stiff joints and tight muscle.

Why it’s done

Guests come to tuina for:

  • Frozen shoulder
  • Neck and back muscle tension
  • Stiffness after long flights or desk work
  • Tennis elbow and repetitive strain
  • Tension headaches

Risks

Tuina is safe for most people. Possible effects include:

  • Soreness the next day, similar to after exercise
  • Light bruising on sensitive skin
Tell your physician before treatment if you:
  • Have osteoporosis
  • Have a skin condition or open wound in the area
  • Take blood thinners

How you prepare

  • Wear loose cotton clothing. Tuina is usually done through clothes.
  • Tell the practitioner where it hurts and which movements are hardest.

What you can expect

Before the procedure

The practitioner checks how far each joint moves and where the tension sits.

During the procedure

Pressing, kneading, rolling and stretching. The pressure can be strong, so ask for it lighter if you need to.

After the procedure

Drink water and keep moving gently. Some soreness the next day is normal.

Results

Tuina is often combined with acupuncture. A frozen shoulder may take eight to ten sessions to loosen noticeably.
